Fifty

Karen and KittlenA girl and her kitten doesn’t have quite the same cultural cacheĀ as a boy and his dog, but this is one of my favorite photos of our daughter who, by the way, is an avid dog lover. It’s hard to believe but this sweet young girl is turning fifty in a few days. Where has all the time gone?

Well, some of it can be accounted for:

Being born into a changing world almost three months after Kennedy’s assassination. Then moving transcontinentally from the DC area back home to California at nine months.Three international moves between ten and fifteen – Spain, England and back to California. Marching band in high school which included learning to play the trombone rather than the flute so she could be center glide. Graduating from Fresno State with a degree in accounting. Becoming a CPA. Becoming content with being single on her thirtieth birthday – until she meet the love of her life the following weekend. Enjoying a sweet courtship then a beautiful wedding nine months later. Moving to Kentucky to begin parish life with her pastor husband. Rescuing her first dog. Adopting a seven month old baby boy from Korea. Loosing a dog. Rescuing another dog. Surviving aggressive breast cancer treatment. Rescuing still another dog. Three more international moves – Germany, China and back to the US – moving her up the corporate ladder each time. All interspersed with shipping three large dogs internationally and adopting a four year old Chinese boy while in China. And most recently – celebrating ten years cancer free! This woman has reason to be celebrating fifty years of event filled life!

And the above doesn’t even include besting her Chinese co-workers in a ping pong tournament while she lived in Shanghai! They were stunned; we were not surprised. Or having one of the most wonderful laughs in the world.

It’s a bummer that she has to fly to Brussels on her birthday for business, but there are plans to rendezvous in Spain in the near future in order revisit and see with adult eyes where she lived between ten and almost thirteen. There are big plans to celebrate this milestone birthday. And we are so glad to be a part of it.

Happiest of birthdays, sweet girl. We love you!!!

Beautiful and true in every way. Also one of my favorite pictures! I seem to remember a couple of Thelma and Louise moments… Perhaps they will make another appearance in Spain?
